Your argument is good until you get to Belgium. Belgium was neutral
and Germany did not have to invade to get at France.

Italy was a pre-war ally of the Central Powers who refused to join
the war. One of the main reasons Italy joined the Allies was she was
very afraid of the Royal Navy. Territorial concessions from
Austria-Hungary were the carrot used by Britain and France to go with
the stick of the Royal Navy.
