This reminds me of a story. When I was in my early 20s and living on
Capitol Hill in Denver (*nice* part of town--heh, just kidding), I used to
go to parties in Lodo...back in the early 90s (1991) before all the
renovation, before Coors Field even existed, when all the warehouses were
still warehouses and not "lofts". I rode with a couple to one particular
party--they ended up getting in a fight and leaving in a huff at 2:00 in the
morning, leaving me at a party where I knew *no one.* I walked home from
Lodo to an apartment on Capitol Hill....all the way through downtown Denver,
dressed in a mini skirt and cowboy boots. My guess is that it was about 4
miles, but I'm not sure. I was crazy for doing so....my strategy? I sang
church hymns at the top of my voice the whole way, so that I would look like
an absolute looney. I was not bothered in the least... not even by homeless
people, but they were all sleeping by that point......
So, it WORKS. Of course, someone could have shot me for waking them up, I
suppose.
