the retail average nationwide(doesn't really matter whether its eckerd,
kroger, cvs, etc) now is about 85-90k. Little less in some places,
little more in others. So picking up extra shifts here and there
easily can get someone into the low six figures. Salaries will have to
bottom out eventually though; if salaries get too high in the next 7-8
years(ie 150k+), then increasing automation and mail order bulk will
become a much bigger priority. Pharmacists would still be needed, but
not in the same numbers.
Plenty of pharms have been grandfathered in under the old system, but
now most every pharm school has gone the pharmD way, which means 4
years of pharmacy school, and most all pharm applicants now apply to
pharmacy school with an undergraduate degree. So you're looking at 8
years of post-secondary education at a minimum to do a job(assuming you
go retail as most do) that really doesn't require it and probably isn't
all that interesting. Combine that with the fact that retail pharm
jobs don't quite measure up in benefits(mainly retirement) relative to
many other jobs paying 60-70k rather than 90-100k, and it doesn't seem
quite as great. Plus there is a lot of uncertainty over the future of
retail pharmacy......25 years from now the landscape of retail pharm is
likely to be far different than it is today. The new push from pharmD
programs is to become more clinical, but so far physicians and hmo
groups really haven't got on board with this yet.
