In the sectional final, one of Illinois' ginger kids Charlie
O'Brien had some monster grabs and really carried Illinois
in its decimation of a very solid (although a bit tired
looking) Purdue squad. Watch for Charlie to continue making
some big plays at Regionals, especially if the wind allows
for hucks. If you put your best defender on Charlie, other
Illinois cutters that will step up are Brian Phelan (another
ginger kid) and Chris Hidaka (half-white half-something),
with arguably the best hands on the team.
Also hopefully coming off the "DL" for Illinois (didn't play
at Sectionals, should play at Regions) is sophomore handler
Zach Frantz, "Sid", with money throws and great athleticism.
Too early to hype Callahan 2012?
In my opinion, that makes six players to watch for Illinois
- Sid, Ryan Smith, Walden handling; Charlie, Phelan, Hidaka
as cutters. Not saying all should be all-region but
certainly worth watching.
Although I didn't see Indiana play at Sectionals, from what
I saw at club sectionals last fall and what has been posted
here, Ed Wu from Indiana should be exciting to watch. My
club team played against his team once with Ed and once
without him after he was hurt, and the difference was night
and day. Virtually unguardable and the center of their
team. --
