Dave K, you must have rehabbed like a champ, 'cause I'm 4 months out
from my surgery and I'm barely running 3 miles and doing light cutting
on my own. I won't get on a field until at least 6 months post-op and
may not even do that if I'm not feeling 100%. Did you have the cadaver
graft? I hear that has a quicker return, and is often used in the
pro's for that reason. I had the hamstring graft, which my surgeon
told me can actually be a couple times STRONGER than my original ACL
if rehabbed properly.

Concerned Citizen, I'm not sure why you would trust and follow the
advice of some hacks on RSD over your doctor's advice, but for what
it's worth: get surgery, rehab, and cheer your teammates on this
season. Nothing in this sport is worth a lifetime of knee pain. It
sucks, I know all to well, but it's temporary.

Wiggity, good call on the cadaver (allograft) vs. your own hamstring/
patella (autograft)..  Dave lays out some very good info, but that is
an important factor in recovery.  I had an allograft due to my age and
was running 1 month later.  If you are older, your own tissue may not
be up to the task of replacing an ACL.  If you are younger, tissue
rejection risks are higher.  My daughter, a D1 athlete, had a patella
autograft and her recovery/rehab was much longer.  I wore a brace for
a year, but current thought is that they don't do much to prevent a
tear and my daughter never wore one.
Everyone who has stated that you don't want to ignore the meniscus
injury is spot on.  The ACL is easy to fix, but the meniscus could
haunt you forever.
Citizen, I assume you are young, so I'd recommend* you bite the
bullet, get it fixed and resume your ultimate career later.  You've
got lots of playing time ahead of you.

* by recommend, I mean I'm no doctor.  You should consult with a
surgeon who works with athletes.

I tore my ACL and medial meniscus at the end of July.

Dude...don't play. That would be dumb and you will ruin your knee.

I'm having surgery in december and have mentally committed myself to
the 6 months recovery. Until that time, my doctor...who also does all
the knee and shoulder operations/procedures/oversees recovery for all
the Athletes at Florida State says NO ULTIMATE, but i can bike all I
want. You can get on an eliptical machine, you can get on a
treadmill...just don't do anything with side to side movement such as
ultimate or basketball or the hustle

Suck it up...do what the Dr. says and take the short term DL time
rather than runing your future...

I'm only 25, but I've had all kinds of injuries (pretty much all
because of pickup basketball or ultimate) and they either lasted much
longer or didn't recover properly when i didn't listen to the dr.
I've also had a very successful SLAP repair and i listened to
everything the doctor said and because i did my therapy and healed
like a good boy, i recovered ahead of schedule
.
