Knappy, that survey just reported that southerners have a higher body
mass index, or BMI. BMI is not a true measure of obesity. It is just
a ratio of weight to height. Using BMI, NFL linebackers are obese.
It may just be that country folk are thicker and stronger than you
candy ass yankees, and not carrying a higher percentage of body fat
(which is, in my opinion, the real measure of obesity).
Indeed, BMI is inferior to body fat measurements, but body fat
measurements are far harder, so you go with what you've got.
BMI over-reports obesity in the case of elite strength-training
athletes, and under-reports in the case of the elderly.
So, are southerners: 1) Stronger, 2) Fatter, or 3) Younger?
Perhaps its time for an informal study. All you southerners out
there, head out into the streets and start counting. A point in
column A for all the NFL linebackers you see, a point in column B for
all the fatties, and a negative point in column C for all the
greybeards. I've never been to the obesity capital (Mississippi,
Alabama, the deep south), but I've been to Atlanta, and Richmond, and
the Triangle, and Charleston, and Charlotte. I don't think you're
going to have nearly enough points in column A to explain the data, as
it were. You will, I'm sure, find fat people and old people aplenty.

ps, could you pick me up a chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes
and gravy on your way back from your research expedition?
Chicken fried steak, mash potatoes, green beans with a little sugar,
sweet tea, dinner roll and a bottle of worcestershire sauce for my
steak. That's some good eatin'.
