I'd hate to be accused of thread jacking here but after all, we are talking
about the ever important topic of WORLDs. As in, this is the so called
world championships and the best, the very best they have to offer us with
regards to 'meaningful' statistics is goals and throws for goals?
What a complete joke this sport is.
What a joke your logic is if you think that your premise entails your
conclusion (If I run a basketball tourney and keep shitty stats, does
that make basketball suck?), but I agree at least with the premise.
Hockey has precedent for counting two passes back and that makes some
sense here too.
More importantly, turn-over numbers are significantly more useful when
touches are included as well. Handlers will probably have a higher
absolute number but a lower percentage... Counting D's is great cuz
D's are cool, but the stat doesn't really say much since it's so
dependent. Was it just a really bad throw that was right to a
defender? How can one guy get a D when his whole team had to be
locked down in order for the throw to go his way? And so on.
While we're at it: Line of scrimmage is the 50. Quarterback drops
back to his 40 and hits a receiver at the opponents 45. Receiver gets
wrapped up but his defender loses footing and fails to secure the
tackle. Receiver traipses 45 yards for the score. QB threw the ball
15 yards, if the defender does his job, the scorekeepers say 5 yard
pass. As it happens, he and his receiver both get credit for a 50
yard pass, but we were watching the game and saw no such thing.
Defender might get marked for a missed tackle, but the only stat that
makes SC when his contract comes up is tackles made, not tackles
missed (I hope GM's pay more attention to the fine print on the stat
*** though). QB and WR should get credit for the 5 yards in the
air, defender should get charged for an error (a la baseball). But
what credit for the 45 yard run? No error means no 45 yard run so
"unearned?" On the other and, the wide out probably did earn it by
blowing by a linebacker and jukeing a safety. Give him credit from
the first move he makes to avoid a tackle by a non-erring defender?
How do you possibly do that consistently. Oh wells. Football's a
joke anyway.
Still, something is better than nothing and it's cool to see who's
scoring. =)
