Yes.  The observer system lies between player- and ref-oriented

it might draw the weaknesses of refs, but it sure dont draw the
strengths (stopped time efficiency being the main one).

the same thing it there is a foul limit with observers and he enforces
a bougus call by a player.

True, but that does increase the requirements.  One player has to
cheat AND the observer has to get it wrong.

also increases the process and the boredom. but dont ya mean one
player "gets" to cheat and the observer has to get it wrong.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

dont you think (as most do) that the
deterants arent strong enough in ultimate?

I certainly think there are some violations that occur a lot.
Fouling on the mark early in the count, double team, excessive contact
when going for a floating disc.  What I don't see are players calling
these fouls much.

uhhhhh and dont ya think thats because stopping play penalizes the
offended team moreso than the consequence of the violation to the
opposing team.......and you dont see this as a problem? which brings
me back to my original question.
-------------------------------------------------------------

I don't see ultimate as having more fouls called or
stoppages in play than any other sport.

thats cause you are emotionally attatched. didnt you read the posts
critisizing that part of the recent college presentation.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Certainly "victims" would call more violations if they could
secure greater rewards by doing so, but I don't think that the game is
out of control, no.  Ultimate is still way less physical than
comparably high level basketball or soccer.

and less entertaining........and sadly, its probably totally due to
the arbitration process.
---------------------------------------------------------------
That it was one half doesn't enter into it.  Say the same thing
happened on the second point of the second half.  When there are foul
limits, players have to adjust their game, or leave the game.  This
sucks for the fans even if the call was legit, and it sucks for the
player and his team if it wasn't.  Remember when KG got a clean block
on Gasol but had to sit down anyway when the ref blew the call?  I'm
not a Celtic or Laker fan, but I was pissed because I'd rather watch
KG than his backup.  Presumably KG was pissed too...?  The
commentators mentioned something along the lines of "he shouldn't have
done something that might have looked like a foul."  My reaction?  Why
the fuck not?  This isn't acting school, it's the fucking NBA finals
and he just blocked the dude.  If you've seen Office Space, you'll
know what I mean when I ask "why should KG change, the ref's the one
that sucks."

because no one would watch it if it were self officiated or if calls
were player initiated. Its just simply the sainer of the available
options.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Which is beside the point... "make-up" calls are a lame way to run a
game.

not as lame as a tit for tat call fest
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sure they can/have/will.  But if that's bad then refs are worse,
since refs have even more power.

not if they are bringin stopped time efficiency to the table with em.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Ya know, the way you people
resort to playing this diminished value of victory card is so fuckin
gay and desperate.

Gay and desperate like Barry and Rocket denying the steroid
allegations?  I've never seen a competitor stand idly by when accused
of winning dirty.

steve dugan did.....or he didnt......where would a video taped, after
the fact, confession of cheating in a self officiated game (at a very
crucial time.......in worlds semis) fall.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, quit it with the "you people" business.  I speak for myself,
not
some imaginary conspiratorial team of folks with whom you disagree.

you know youre one of "them".....maybe even the biggest one (here on
rsd anyways)
.
