Re: Women's Nationals Seedings

Tuning in...the landscape is looking different in college women's
ultimate. But I was still surprised by this sentence:

but I don't see how you can't put them at number 1. They obliterated
UPenn, NYU and Maryland -- all of whom are very respectable. Perhaps
they rolled over after getting down early in order to conserve energy,
but consider how many teams out there could even think about forcing
another top-notch team to roll over.

Maryland...maybe. Their RRI is high, but in their only out-of-region
games, they lost big to Wake Forest and North Carolina. The RRIs of
NYU and UPenn are much lower. They both do not even show up in the
NUMP ranking.

As for big scores against other top teams, see NW Regionals.

Finally, some history. Traditionally, the Metro East region has not
done well at Nationals. You have to go back to 2003 to find a Metro
East team making quarters, and no team from the region has ever made
semis. In 2006 Swarthmore had an undefeated season entering Nationals
and finished 13th. Now, Ottawa is not '06 Swat. They won Vegas,
beating several top-notch teams to do so. On the other hand, Vegas
was February 8. It will be over three months since they have seen top-
level competition. Meanwhile, the three teams they beat traveled to
both Stanford and Centex. They experienced jet lag and different
climates. They played more games overall on the season (in all 3
cases, twice as many as Ottawa, and in the case of UCLA, significantly
more than that), and saw a lot more games against high quality
competition.

An undefeated season is impressive - but it's 4 wins against Nationals
teams. By way of contrast, UBC's record against teams at Nationals is
13-5 (3 losses to UCLA, 2 to UW).
