I know it isn't Google.groups, but I feel like it wouldn't be

There's no way I'm the first person to think of or suggest it, so
maybe someone can enlighten me.

Definitely would be useful. I can forsee tournament postings and info
all over the place. They could hire some moderators to get rid of spam
and filter the forums regularly and provide UPA officer feedback. Well
defined forum groups that are linked from upa's main page could
benefit players, TD's, and fans (!!!) immensely. The only trouble I
see would be flaming and inappropriate stuff that goes on. I don't
know about lible issues but it would probably just have to be
monitored by an administrator to filter out the crap.

You wouldn't even have to HIRE moderators. I know IGN, a gaming and
entertainment website and one of the largest on the web, does not pay
their moderators, just like many sites do not. However, they certainly
could hire moderators, thus giving them a stricter control of who gets
in and out.

There is a question about whether they could generate the traffic to
make this undertaking worthwhile, but i think they could.
