I would like to see some sort of regular season playoffs sort of deal.
It isnt really inovative, leagues in other sports at all levels have
this type of setup, but it would add another whole level to strategy
if teams were to face one another more often. Not only would it add to
scouting but it would also give teams something to play for before the
series if they had to place so high to even reach it.
other sports have leagues because other sports are crazy organized (no
teams disappearing, reappearing, etc.). the big thing is geographic
disbursement of teams. if you look at baseball, which is extremely
developed and has hundreds of leagues, all of the leagues work in
descending geographical order. the pros are spread out across the
country, AAA ball is in a four or five state area, AA ball is in a two
or three state area, A ball is within driving distance to each game,
and that isnt even talking about the city leagues, rec leagues and
other subsidiary organizations.
ultimate is obviously not baseball. at the same time, the geographical
location is somewhat similar, although more chaotic. there are city
leagues, and there are high school leagues, but after that it is
tournament based. even the city leagues and high school leagues are
centered around a tournament-type schedule: get everyone, or as many
teams as possible out for one or two days and play as many games as
possible to find out a winner. (granted, city leagues are allowed a
lot more time and each season has a new batch of teams.)
as long as ultimate is based on a tournament system, leagues are going
to be hard to make. unless i am mistaken thats what the CCS is trying
to do for college, make the tournament system into a league system. it
seems like, every so often, college teams or club teams scrimmage each
other and make a big deal about it, but that is nowhere near having a
season, a schedule, and an huge mix of teams to play throughout said
season. it seems to me like one huge issue with this is money, since
club teams arent getting paid. how are men and women, with full time
jobs completely outside of ultimate, supposed to travel from boston to
seattle, or atlanta to minneapolis, for a single game on a weeknight?
that is the beauty of the tournament, instead of flying across the
country for a single game, teams are able to fly across the country to
play a handful of games against a handful of teams over a couple
days.
as far as innovations go, why not more cameras for ultivillage? i, for
one, would love to see all of the pool play games in full, and that is
one hell of a lot of work, to even get the pool play games that were
on the UCC '07 discs was more than impressive.
