Re: Announcing my candidacy for the UPA Board of Directors

From DiscHoops rules:

"If a receiver falls down or slides to make a catch, he must throw
from that position and may not get up until after the disc is thrown."

That is the extent of the rule. Massive ambiguity. What position? The
position they stop in? The position they make the catch in? How does
momentum figure into this? If a player rolls, is that a travel? Give
me the DiscHoop rule that justifies that ruling. What about coming to
one knee as you describe?

Quote:

"Look. Picks are called constantly now and never once do people
actually
just stand there and set up a pick like you suggest. True? "

True. But, if there was not a prohibition on picks, then people WOULD
do that.

"What you're suggesting is that players are going to act maliciously
(T off).
That is a sportmanship issue and would be dealt with accordingly. "

It isn't malicious. When I flatten some guy trying to fight through
one of my picks (BBALL), it isn't malice, its a good pick.

"That players are running around on the field no watching where they
are
going is a problem that ultimate has had for 30 years but I don't want
to
instill rules just to protect them. "

You don't want to protect them?? Wow. I really think you have your
priorities wrong. Why do you think chop blocks/clipping/facemasks/
horsecollars/etc. are illegal in football? Flagrant fouls in
basketball? Safety. That is what rules are for, #1 reason. If the
sport doesn't take reasonable steps to protect its participants, it is
askign for serious serious trouble.

"The problem is, people are calling picks all the time when no one is
ever
setting them. It's not really that I want to allow picks, but I want
to
disallow people from calling them. "

See, that is entirely different. BUt, how are you going to make a rule
that doesn't allow picks, but also doesn't let them get called?? If
there is no pick call, people will run routes close to each other that
create picks without setting picks. If there is no rule against it,
people will do it.

"I don't know what the answer is but I know that both goaltimate and
dischoops don't have a problem with it. "

dischoops and goaltimate are played on a smaller field more focused
around a point (the goal) and as such you don't have people running at
full sprints and such over long distances. Same reason you can have
picks in basketball safely (limited space and speeds) but not football
(large space, people moving at full sprint).

Don't have time to address all the issues anymore, so these will have
to do for now.
