Re: Regional Results: ATLANTIC COAST

I observed 8 games at AC Regionals....

Rd 1, Pool Play
Georgia vs Tenn
15-10...Tenn went down by 4 early and eventually cut the lead to 2 at 10-8,
11-9 and 12-10, before they stopped scoring.

Rd 2, Pool Play
Tenn vs Georgia Tech
killer game! started with a first pass turnover...then 6 straight clean no
turnover possessions. 3s.
GT scores twice in a row to go up 5-3.
Tenn ties it up at 6s.
Disc near the back line of the endzone, handblock tipped hammer wobbles
nearly to the goalline where it is intercepted for a Callahan goal. awesome
play, very exciting. .....can't recall even which team scored it! how lame
is that?
GT takes half 8-6 and goes up a third goal out of half. 9-6.
Tenn ties it at 11s....and takes the lead at 12-11!
GT ties it at 13s and takes the lead 13-11!
Tenn ties it at 13s...GT goes up 14-13.
Tenn ties it up at 14s......OVERTIME!
GT goes up 15-14, Tenn ties at 15s.
GT goes up, Tenn ties 16s....
GT wins 17-16

Rd 3 Pool Play
UNC vs JMU
JMU darts out to a 3-1 lead.
UNC scores 4 to take the 5-4 lead and eventually the half at 8-6.
3 straight out of half give UNC an 11-6 lead.
JMU only manages 2 in the second half and Darkside wins going away 15-8.

CrossOver Game
A1 vs C1
Florida vs UNC
Tons of huck goals.....nearly every goal was a deep shot.
Twice there were two goal leads in the game....at 6-4 and 10-8. Both times,
UNC scored 2 in a row to tie it up.
At 10s, Florida scored to go up one, followed by a 2 goal run by UNC to take
their first lead of the game 12-11, game to 13.
Florida scored two in a row to win 13-12.
Awesome game, lots of emotion and energy.
As an observer......i gave two "do overs"....and felt totally horrible about
it.
i don't ever wanna give a do over...ever. but was conflicted twice in this
game.
1st...Gibson on O chasing a rising poor pass with D Matt Thomas behind
him...Gibson goes up and is bumped in the back as the disc goes up and sails
back over their heads towards where they had run from.
I considered....it looked like what i'd call a foul, but the disc rose up
over their heads and appeared uncatchable...but i wondered if Gibson could
have made the grab at it's peak prior to it fading back...or if he could
have turned and made the catch on the chase down, since the disc didn't sail
far away, but rather only a few steps back..........weird......
back to the thrower....i felt like a loser.

2nd...huck that i thought Matt Thomas D'd while chasing from behind and then
slapped the O's arm......i sent it back......felt like a loser......tried
not to let these do overs affect me the rest of the game.......it was hard.

thoughts of the day.....
UNC looked much better than i had anticipated them to be...very good.

JMU didn't seem so great....but showed glimpses of how they can be great.

Georgia....gave up more points than i thought they would....but their
opponents on day one proved to be pretty sound.

Florida....i didn't like the way that Florida played. I personally wouldn't
want to play the style of ultimate that they display. It looks fun to be
the guy that gets the disc every other pass...but when it IS literally every
single other pass, it takes a great deal of that 'team' concept away. I
started rolling my eyes and putting my palms up in the air in a questioning
manner on some points. ....guys....don't get me wrong, i like to get the
frisbee a lot too, and it is certainly the "funnest part of ultimate" to
have the disc in your hand.....but trust your brother a bit! I don't
particularly like spread offenses and having a full time dump...and watching
one guy playing a style that simply uses teammates in order to give himself
a new stall count every single other pass, sort of turned me off from the
Florida team.
now......don't get me wrong....he(gibson, as identified by his shirt) shared
the disc with teammates on occassion who turned and wonderfully jacked the
disc for beautiful goals. teammates exhibited great skill with the
disc......so i know that they are a solid all around team.

ok.....more on my thoughts about florida following their Finals write up...

Day Two
QuarterFinals
Florida vs GT
uhm....we thought this game would be closer.....
8-3 at half.....
15-5 at the end.

SemiFinals
UGA v UNC
first point of the game....big call that went to the observers...
UNC spread O, up field cutter jukes in and defender falls as cutter takes
off deep, foul call by the D. O chases down the huck and leaps to make the
catch and stretches to have his first contact in the goal.
Sidelines yelling not in, me signally and calling the receiver IN the goal.
Foul call back at the cut....ruled....NO FOUL, goal.
some are saying 'the disc should come back because some people stopped on
the original foul call'...and...'the foul call was before the throw, bring
it back'
i ruled....'there were two defenders back there at the catch, so no one
stopped except for the D on the ground who made the call...and since i ruled
that he wasn't fouled to begin with....GOAL'
i think it was the right call......
UNC burst out to a huge 5-1 lead.....their fifth goal was a
Callahan....pull, d sprints down to set up the cup and the first pass is
slapped off course and chased down by the same defender at the sideline.
8-5 at half.
UGA pulls to within 12-11but gives up 2 to give UNC game point 14-11.
14-12 and 15-12....game and bid to Nationals UNC.

Finals
Florida vs UNC
UNC comes out on absolute fire! Up 3-0. Florida answers with 2 of their
own, 3-2. UNC goes up 4-2 and has the chance to go up 5-2....huck to the
downwind goalline....TIMEOUT! as everyone knows....95% of all timeouts
result in a turnover. and the fact was proven. Turnover and Florida
instead of beind down 3, scores upwind and turns two downwind to tie it up
at 4s and takes the lead with another upwinder 5-4.
UNC had been having a great weekend hucking....tons of goals, very few
turns.
However, early in this game, they had already thrown 3 hucks out of bounds,
and couldn't score at the goalline at a crucial time......still....only down
1.
7-6.......and Florida takes half 8-6.
UNC manages only one in the second half and Florida wins 15-7.
Repeat Regional Champs.
UNC couldn't take advantage of 4 or 5 gibson early turnovers, and couldn't
overcome missed huck opportunities that were clicking in every other round
this weekend.....

now......more thoughts about Florida.......
i noticed it in their Quarterfinal game against GT.....more than one player
was getting to touch the disc. On some possessions...it seemed like Gibson
would touch the disc once...and not get it again for 4 or 5 passes. It was
a far stretch from Sat's action, when he LITERALLY did not let 3 passes go
before demandingly getting the disc again. Some sort of .......FLOW.....
began to emerge from Saturday's Florida ultimate.
In the Finals against UNC.....Gibson often disappeared from some
possessions, touching the disc only once or twice during an full field
march. Flow....actual full team flow. Gibson was witnessed deep down
field, away from the handlers and dumps....making cuts in and out, and on
one occassion, caught a mid range shot going deep.
I am in no way an expert on how Florida plays....i never saw them last year,
and hadn't seen them until this weekend this season.
BUT i can say with 100% certainty that they played a beautiful style of play
as the tournament wore on...and once Gibson got away from the disc more
often, allowing his teammates to become more involved, they looked like more
of a team capable of winning with Team Offense.
Their full team flow was more beautiful than was their...."hurry up and give
it back to me, damnit give me the disc back" flow from saturday.
I hope that they stick with the latter.......and share the stall counts
more.
Try to stick with the beautiful full team flow, and Florida looks like a
team that could win back to back national championships to go with their
back to back regional championships.....otherwise....some team is gonna find
a defender to stick right on gibson and not let him get the disc
everytime......

UNC could make semis at nationals probably.....if they click like they did
for 6 of their 7 games this weekend.

UGA seems like they could make the region proud at nationals....finishing
middle of the pack-ish, while possibly RUINING some other team's season with
a big upset.

JMU.....poor guys who got the wrong uniforms in the mail......they looked
way better than i had expected, and seem like a team that could stick around
those 'games to go' for a couple years.....
once you get a taste of those games to go.....it makes you want to keep
playing in them.

UNCW Seamen....i don't think that they are done getting better yet.
look out for them in the next couple of years!

Aside from my two horrible "back to the thrower" do overs.....the observers
had great weekends!
Thanks for the great weeend Atlantic Coast teams and Coordinators!
