I'm not talking about an up/down call. up/down calls could be missed
ie. players in the way, catcher's body in the way, etc. I don't think
either of those calls were missed. I'm just talking about calls in
general. One that really bothers me is marking fouls. If the thrower
calls a foul from hand to hand contact on the throw, how can the
observer not uphold it? It's impossible for the observer to know. As
long as players are calling the fouls we have to trust them.
I saw too many rulings by observers this weekend where the right call
seemed difficult to determine. I'd rather see a no call, send it back,
than have an observer make calls on a "feeling" that change the course
of a game.
