Who here is still ready to take it for a catch? If yes, please watch
the "catch" off Cook a few minutes ago. Mr. Cook would be denied a
century by pure cheating if England would have agreed to the fielder's
word...
How do you know what the fieldsman's 'word' was? I turned my telly up to
full volume but I couldn't hear this word at all. In the meantime it
looked
to me as though Hughes indicated he didn't know whether he'd caught it or
not, although it does look poor form to be high-fiving your team mates in
such circumstances.
But yes, the idea of taking a fieldsman's word was discredited long ago.
Andrew
Fielder claimed the catch - that is what I meant by his word; that was
not meant to say that he literally "said" I took the catch. What gave
you the idea that he indicated that he did not know?
Er, the lack of overt celebration from Hughes and a bit of shoulder
shrugging. As far as I could see he appealed for the catch, which is not
the same as saying "I know I caught it".
I guess we'd disagree on that - seemed to be a fair bit of
celebration.
I did not see any
sign of indecision about the appeal other than a minimal delay before
people went up. It was the kind of catch that it is hard to believe
that the fielder did not know. Perhaps if the catch had been taken by
a wk, he may have trouble deciding if that was a catch or not if he
was unsighted by gloves, but I have a very hard time believing that
the fieldsman did not know here. All this would also not be a huge
deal - just let the three umpires decide - if it was not Ponting's
position as the Aussie captain (till this match) that the fielder's
word should be taken...
You are assuming the appeal would have been sustained had there been no
opportunity to refer it to the third umpire for TV review. The point being
that umpires are now able to freely call for reviews of their own decisions
in a way that was not possible in the past, hence it makes sense to just go
straight to the replays and forget about that the fieldsman's word. I would
like to think that in the absence of TV review a fieldsman with a good view
of the action such as Brad Haddin would have said "you didn't catch that"
and the appeal would have been withdrawn.
I think it's unreasonable of you to judge the actions of the fieldsman
against a standard that is not currently in force.
Fair point - given a review system is in play, the standard for
acceptable appeal is lower; I am OK with that.

If only. Your modus operandi, whatever nic you're using at the time,
is to post material that you hope makes Australian players look bad,
on the pretext that you "just want to discuss" it.
If someone argues successfully against it, you might say something
like "oh, I didn't think of it like that", only to raise exactly the
same issue a few weeks later as if it didn't matter.
Otherwise, I'm with Andrew on this one.
Moby
Nics? I have only ever used two nics - my name, and Freaky, the latter
I have used for years. I sign all my notes V, which is my first
initial. There is a "V" who posts to rsc from time to time - not me.
The only Aussie I have any real problem with is alvey, whom I put in
the same category as SD, Don, etc. I stopped posting for a couple of
years and recently started reading rsc again...Regardless, you are
more than welcome to your opinion of my posts. In this case you seem
to take umbrage to a thread in which I felt initially that Hughes was
in the wrong but was convinced by Andrew that I was too harsh, and had
said that Dhoni was wrong to claim a catch someone posted a link to.
That is a pretty fine way of making Australia look bad!!
