I don't disagree with much of what you say. You lay out an
excellent, rational scheme for the future of cricket.
From each according to his cricketing ability; to each market
according to its need. The problem with all such excellent,
rational schemes is that they tend to fail in practice
because they leave out the irrational, emotional aspects that
drive much of human activity.

I am not ignoring that aspect at all. People can still root for city-
based teams. There was a doubt before IPL started whether that will
happen, but post-IPL, I don't think there is much doubt in that
regard. Especially in a country like India, where we have so much
regional differences, I don't see why people shouldn't support
regional/city-based teams.

I keep thinking how much at
odds with your professed rationalism your emotional attachment
is to a team that's composed significantly of hired help, but
which happens to call itself Bangalore.

Not at odds at all. Whip up the emotion (consciously) so that you can
enjoy the game and then turn it off when it is not needed :-)
