I'm a guitar tutor, have been for 20 odd years. I've been playing
guitar for more than 30 years. My wife bought me a mandolin.
Tiny thing with 8 strings tuned like a banjo or something. For
about two hours I struggled to work out how to tune the thing.
Then when I did it was easy to play. St Annes reel, the Belfast
hornpipe all just came out of the instrument as if by magic.
Is there no end to your talent? Umpire, music tutor, all round
good guy!
Now I know that I would have a lot better chance than a regular mandolin beginner, and that I'm playing on a wing rather than in format like when I play guitar, but I reckon that if you have
some idea of the music the instrument is tuned to play and some
degree of technique you will be able to make a good attempt.
I've thought about getting some other fretted stringed instruments,
such as a mandolin. I listened to seven Blackmore's Night CD's
back-to-back on Saturday and figure that I may as well try to join
in.
Blackmore's Night [2 thumbs up]. Ritchie seems to really be enjoying
making this kind of music, and seems to be genuinely happy at home
too. Good for Candice (and good for Ritchie...va va va voom). I'd like
to see the sturmmeister rev up the Strats and the Marshalls to "11"
one more time with Rainbow (if not the Purps) for nostalgia if nothing
else [cue "Burn", "Kill The King", "Highway Star"], but he can keep
doing his excellent BN gig as long as he wants.
There is also the physical factor of which notes a hand can fretI've seen a picture of Jimmy Page padded up but I don't recall the
or play. Ten fingers for a piano, 8 for a guitar and 3 for a
trumpet (include thumbs).
On topic Jimmy Page played a Gibson and was photographed padded
up and batting with it.
Gibson bat.
All good English boys that play the guitar love cricket. It's the law! :-)
