BUT! BUT! BUT!

Who the hell is going to watch a team made up of Aussies, Kiwis,
Saffers, Indians, Pakistanins etc.etc. in some sort of artificial mix,
based in Mumbai, Delhi,Calcutta(Kolcatta or however it's spelled this week)
It will mean maybe mean a lot to local Indians who will support a team
based in their locality but around the rest of the world who gives a stuff.
Don't think I'll bother watching any games (I could with sky) but only
have a passing interest in how the Kiwis are going - match results will
mean very little - I don't blame any players going but really wonder
what is going to happen to real cricket, which is where the real
interest lies in the rest of the world.

If this was true for other sports no one would watch the English
League, Serie A etc.

There is a fundamental difference between soccer and the IPL which may
or may not be important.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan were all once
local clubs whose players grew up and lived nearby, as did their
supporters. Football's core history and culture has always revolved
around the clubs: international football is the icing on the cake.

It took two generations for the local clubs to evolve into ones which
could field teams consisting entirely of foreigners. They had a core
of supporters who carried on supporting as the team changed.

The IPL is trying to invent that core support with clubs which have no
previous existence. It may work or it may not, but citing the lengthy
evolution of european club football may not be very germane.

Cheers,

Mike
