Surrey were actually playing three front-line spinners in this match. I
wonder when last that happened in the Championship. The third was Nayan
Doshi, who had figures of 2-42 and 1-62.

I'm sure it must have happened at least once since the last one I
remember, which was when Fred Titmus popped his head round the
dressing room door to wish the team good luck and Mike Brearley told
him to change into his whites to reinforce Edmonds and Emburey in
about 1982.

Cheers,

Mike

I knew that Titmus had played in 5 different decades - made his FC
debut in 1949 and his last match (this one) was in 1982.

Interesting to note three players who also played in his debut match:
GOB Allen, RWV Robins and AW Wellard.

In that last game, Wayne Daniel and Sylvester Clarke were playing, and
Titmus took 3/90 in the match off 25-ish overs (not that Daniel and
Clarke were great batsmen!).

Titmus also played in teams with Mike Gatting, who retired from FC
cricket in 1998.

So, Titmus was good enough to play with/against Allen, Robins and
Wellard, and also good enough to play with/against Gatting, Daniel and
Clarke. Makes you wonder about the relative merits of all of these
players.

I guess its a bit like Sobers, who was good enough to demolish Lillee
in one innings in 1972, but struggled against the 1954-55 Australians.
But Lillee had a good record against Viv Richards.

So, what if Richards had faced Lindwall and Miller? Based on the
above, you would be forgiven for thinking that L&M might have done ok,
but we all know that standards were much lower then so that can't be
true ...
