There were some interesting comments on TMS regarding Trescothick's
departure from the field after 15 balls due to a "migraine" when he
subsequently re-appeared not many minutes later.
Virus?
Gooch made reference to cold showers, tactical advice from Fletcher
and a massage (much tittering in the back of the commentary box).
Agnew mentioned a world record recovery from such an affliction and
then bravado took over and he hinted at dodgy dealings.
Well, of course they are all medical experts, aren't they?
It wouldn't be a world record recovery if Trescothick is the type of
migraine sufferer who gets an aura some minutes before the splitting
headache kicks in. There has been for several years a
self-administerable injection of some medication which can ward off
the actual headache if you take it in time - which is why you need to
be the type who gets the aura some time in advance, rather than the 10
seconds or so warning my wife gets. Makes you a bit groggy for twenty
minutes or so, apparently, but then you're right as rain.
Yes, I emailed TMS about that, I get an aura warning and if I take
medication within about 20mins of onset and lie down for about 15mins
all symptoms subside and I don't get headache or nausea. If I can't
get the medication in time I need to lie down in a darkened room and
resign myself to a belting headache lasting hours and a 'hangover' type
reaction the next day. If I don't do that I get serious visual
distortions (certainly couldn't bat or field!) followed by nausea plus
the headache etc. Anyone who thinks migraines are just headaches is
way off the mark! Fortunately I no longer get them very often, one of
the advantages of age I guess, in my late 20's/early 30's they were
quite frequent. My sympathy to your wife Mike, without the warning
that I used to get it would have been very difficult. I used tablets
called Migraleve which are available over the counter in the UK and
were extremely effective for me but wouldn't work very well with that
short a warning I guess.
Phil.
England need to be careful otherwise Ponting's rants and raves last
summer might actually start to gain some credence.
[nods] My thought too.
The Laws and playing conditions are pretty clear on when a substitue
is allowed and when he isn't, and it is not at all clear that the
umpires are enforcing the Laws and conditions. While the umpires fail
to do their duty, England will presumably get away with this ludicrous
shuffling of the pack every few minutes. Inzamam was off the field
several times too, though, and I don't think you're really supposed to
take breaks for another plate of lunch either.
The Laws etc. are explicit about only one thing which is changing shoes
or shirts for which you have to leave the field but aren't allowed a
sub., otherwise it's up to the umpire's discretion, who must be
notified of the reason (not necessarily by the player concerned) when
you leave the field and the player must then get permission to re-enter
the field. Typically the turn-around in a Test match can hardly be
less that 2 overs.
The most egregious example of this during the Ashes was Clark who left
the field almost immediately and spent the whole time in the hotel but
was able to bat OK and didn't even need a runner in the second innings.
His substitute took two catches in the match including the England
captain, who didn't throw a hissy fit like Ponting did when he was run
out in the next Test!
