Did he hit the ball though? Even I can play a hook shot. Hitting the
ball is
another matter.

Yes, he hit it. The most remarkable aspect of this shot was that there
appeared to be attacking intent behind it. The execution was somewhat less
convincing, the ball lobbing up to a gentleman at backward square leg
sporting a very long beard.

I suppose the short ball to Martin was a reaction to South African
frustration in the first innings, when Martin managed to play and miss at
well-pitched deliveries outside the off stump five times in a row, before
nicking the sixth.

The disparity between Martin's wickets and runs
continues to grow. Two runs and nine wickets this series. His batting
had had something of a renaisance recently with a few magnificent
4 and 5 not-outs and his average ballooning out to above 2.5. He
appears to have regressed somewhat. I'm still at a loss as to how
he managed 7 on debut. That implies at least two scoring shots
and maybe more. I still have faith that Martin can make that
elusive half century.

Here is the ball-by-ball of the scoring shots in that debut innings:

85.5 Pollock to Martin, two runs, forward, thickish edge past gully and
gets his first runs in test cricket
86.6 Donald to Martin, FOUR, outside off, edges, thickish, past 3rd slip
87.5 Pollock to Martin, one run, leg side, forward, inside edges to long
leg
