Re: Who would have won in 1932-33 without Bodyline?

Jardine's biographer sets the case out:

He cites the averages of English players for the series and then cites
the aussie's averages for the career and says that English win on
averages even wthout Bodyline. Note, the biographer counted English
averages for a series where opposition bowlers are demoralized and
aussie averages are changed by bodyline which figures 7% career run for
Bradman (4 out of 52), almost 20% in likes of Richardson, Woodfull and
Pony.

Woodfull averages 46 in career, averaged 34 in series with body with so
many yellow patches that his doctor thought he was suffering from a
strange tropical disease.
He averages 49 outside this series. (mind you i should look at his home
averages which are even higher) That is extra 135 runs missing.

Ponsford: averages 48.22, averaged 24 in series and missed tests
because of blows he recieved. His 85 in 3rd test was tribute to his
courage and subsequent quick dismissals to his fidelity (wife could not
bear watching him get hit, again and again).
He would average 53 without this series. These are extra 290 runs
missing!

Fingleton averaged 43 in tests, in Bodyline he began with 26,40,83 and
ended total wreck with 1,0,0. He averages 25, without this series, he
averages 48
These are extra 230 runs mising

Alan Kippax, the man who replaced Don for first test scored 27 runs in
2 innings, he avreges 36 in tests outside this series. Avarged 38
outside this series.
extra 50 runs missing.

McCabe averaes 48.21 in tests. In this series he began with 187* and
scored 198 in remaining nine innings. He followed up his style
,attacking and going into the ball'sline and smashing it over longon to
score 32 and 32 then 0,8,7, 20,22,73,4 as Jardine fed him spinners and
himself took the position where most of mccabe's risky shots fell,
jardine caught him thrice himself. Mccabe averaged 43. He would have
averaged 49.5 without the series. Extra 45 runs missing

Vic Richardson, (when ganguly supporters shout for chappel's nani yaad
dila denge, they are meaning this gentlemen's mrs.). He actually shone
with 20 and 30s in all starts and a 83. He followed the woodfull method
of letting the ball hit him and ride it out. Even he cracked in final
test bagging a Pair.

Don averaged 56, he averages 105 without this series. He develped the
third style to combat the bodyline, leaning away from the wicket and
trying to hit ball to wide open spaces which was risky because wickets
were uncovered and even a genius like don would relax and play at a
ball with a less than 100% effort and get out. He got out may times to
Verity because wherever spinenrs came on, he tried to hit them for
maximum and got out couple of times hitting a six in the same over.
That is extra (drum roll please) 400 runs missing!

Add these chaps up and Aussies bowlers would have 1000 runs plus to
bowl with.
Note: this is only overall averages, all these players cited above did
better at home than abroad so Aussie bowlers were missing almost 1300
runs! that is 260 to a match!

England won by 10 wickets, 338 runs, 6 wickets and 8 wickets

1st test may have still gone to them , i doubt it, Mccabe was in
roaring form and Aussies would have in normal conditions scored 500 and
even if england matched them thanks to Sutcliff 194, Aussies would have
added another 300 in second innnings and won with Oreilly and Grimmet
on 6th day pitch..

2nd test: went to aussies.

3rd test: England was 4/30, Robinson cites as luckiest toss we ever
lost but then Leyland and wyatt repaired the score. Ausitralia would
have taken the lead but most likely lose out on 6th day against Verity.
Aussie colapse 4/171 to 193 would have still occurred.

4rth test: Australia was 200/1 before bodyline destroyed them.
NOn-bodyline attack wold have seen then score the 600 and take the
match and series despite Paynter's heroics.

5th test: Australia started with 435 which england matched then from
115/1 they collpased to boydline. Non-bodyline situation would have
seen them maybe reach 500 and add another 300 to make it a tricky final
chase..

Don' batting was hurried, in 5th test, he scored 48 in 50 balls and 71
off 69 balls , hurrying away before he felt his courage or eye might
fail and he gets out...

No way, Australia would have lost the Ashes winning 4 tosses and
playing till death Tests.

Note Most of English bats averaged way above their average in this
series!
