The ICC supersub rule fell victim to the Law of Unintended
Consequences. One of the early articles about the scrapping of the
rule quoted (I believe it was) Gavaskar, who said that the intent of
the rule was to encourage the naming of all-rounders. What happened
instead was that captains/selectors gambled on the toss, selecting a
batting specialist or a bowling specialist and then being screwed if
they lost the toss.
I was against the supersub rule from the start, but that was more
because of my "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy rather than
from any clairvoyant powers. Even though I was against the rule I
wouldn't necessarily characterize an attempt to encourage all-rounders
as MORONic. What was more obviously moronic was the way the rule was
used.
