I would pick him to win a very close decision over Chris Byrd. Byrd would
not have the power to hold Norton off, and Norton would win this fight
with
his jab and with a withering body attack.
I would also take Norton by a unanimous decision over Nicolay Valuev.
Nicolay would jolt Norton with some strong left jabs. But in most of the
rounds, Norton would outhustle Nicolay, and would do enough to earn the
decision on American soil.
However, I don't think Kenny would fare as well with Lamon Brewster.
Brewster has enough power to KO guys like Andrew Golota and Wladimir
Klitschko, and if he comes out with guns blazing here, then it could good
night sweet prince for Ken Norton. Brewster KO2 Norton
Norton would give Hasim Rahman a good fight, but again, I don't know how
well Norton could handle Hasim's power. I see this being the most
interesting matchup of anyone Norton could fight in today's heavyweight
division. But I think that Rahman would win it with a late round stoppage.
His jab and right cross combinations would probably be a little too heavy
for Norton late in the fight.
Norton vs Toney would also be an intriguing matchup. If Norton relies on
his
jab and doesn't follow James to the ropes, then I can see Norton winning a
decision. But if he pulls a Jirov/Rahman and comes mindlessly forward,
then
I like James.
Norton vs. Ruiz would be a close fight. Both fighters would be hurt at
different points in the match. I see Norton ekeing out a close decision
win
in this fight. I think a dominant 12th round by Kenny would be the
difference.
Believe it or not, I like Norton by a knockout over Wladimir Klitschko. I
think Kenny would catch Wlad cold in the first couple of rounds, and I do
not see Wladimir recovering. But the longer the fight progresses, the
better
Wlad's chances become. If he can make it that far, I see Klitschko putting
Norton on Dizzy Avenue with that jab and right cross. But I'm taking Kenny
by KO in the first 5 rounds.
Norton vs David Tua, Sam Peter. I don't see how Norton gets past the
second
round against Tua or Peter. Both guys would knock him into orbit.
I think it is say to say that Norton would do about as well in today's hw
division as he did in the 1970s division. He would fare much better
against
boxers than he would against bruisers.
You are probably right as to where he would stack up against today's
heavyweights, but remember, he is 62 years old.
