I'm not Duane but....
I suspect it's just a bad error message (shock of shocks).
NOTE: this will sound harder than it is. Since the PC plays nice in your
wife's profile, back up your profile's stuff -- use a USB device not the
hard drive -- (desktop folder, favorites folder, and my documents folder,
grab anything valuable from docs and settings"profile"application data
folder (address book, quick launch links, wallpaper, etc). NOTE: some
devices like PDAs keep their config files in the user profile area -- if
you use a Palm or other PDA you may need to reinstall it after creating a
new profile for yourself. Anyway, reboot the PC and log into the main
admin account (or even your wife's account), and create a new user account
and give it admin rights. Call it 'profile2 or something,' go to system
properties>advanced>user profiles and delete your old profile. Reboot
again and log in as 'profile2' or 'DannyBoy' or something. That step
rebuilds your profile. Now just copy your backed up files back to where
they were before. Should fix you up.
Do reboots where I said to so that system files in use get freed up for
copying/deleting.

Hey Duane - Thanks for all the info. I might run my pc through those linkshttp://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3120-20_4-0&ontId=20_4&lop=link&tag=tdw_dltext<ype=dl_dlnow&pid=10861988&mfgId=104443&merId=104443&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.download.com%2F3001-8022_4-10861988.html
you mention below. I called her and she said she had a friend of her
husband's come over and do a few things. I haven't heard back yet, so I
think it must have worked.
While you are still (?) in a generous mood, let me ask you one that has
given me problems for over a year or two. I've tried to get an answer
online, but no luck so far. The problem is that any time I try to do
something that requires administrator status, I get the message "Windows
cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the
appropriate permissions to access the item." This is a pc at home not on a
network. I have admin status, and can't get through this message even if I
log on as the admin.
I am also running on SP1 instead of SP2 because of this problem, I believe.
Oh, and I can't get YouTube to work (says I need to turn on Java, or
something like that), although YouTube does work on my wife's logon.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
dwhite

If you're still reading this thread Dan... here's what I do... and it'sthyme3421@xxxxxxxxx
what I do for a living 5 days a week, plus various clients in my "off"
hours. If for any reason links didn't translate or you can't seem to get
the links to work, let me know via this thread or email
Get her to boot into Safe Mode (when it's completely shut down, push the
button, then hit F8 about as fast as your fingers will allow) the computer
will beep... select safemode, or safemode with networking. Does said virus
still appear? About 50% of the time the virus won't come up in safemode.
If you go safemode with networking, and the virus doesn't show up...
chances are good you'll be able to get online.
The flash drive that you mentioned... get on a different computer, go to
DOWNLOAD.com... search for.... screw it, here's the links:
Spybot Search & Destroy - search string "spybot"
http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3120-20_4-0&ontId=20_4&lop=link&tag=tdw_dltext<ype=dl_dlnow&pid=10844457&mfgId=69274&merId=69274&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.download.com%2F3001-8022_4-10844457.htmlAdAware - search string "adaware"
http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3120-20_4-0&ontId=20_4&lop=link&tag=tdw_dltext<ype=dl_dlnow&pid=10824764&mfgId=6270610&merId=6270610&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.download.com%2F3001-2239_4-10824764.htmlAVG - search string "avg"
because
Download and copy those to the flash drive. Now on her computer, in
safemode, put the flash drive in... copy those to her desktop.
1 by one, double click and install. Then (if in networking) check for
updates. If not in networking, skip checking for updates.
Click "Check for problems"... it'll usually take anywhere from 30-45
minutes, regardless of how long the "time remaining" says.
Click Fix Marked items or something close to that...
rinse & repeat until this list comes up clean.
It's ok to run more than 1 virus scanner at a time... but it could slow
down the computer and overall process depending on the computer speed. Try
it and see... if it slows dramatically... don't do it. If not, don't worry
about it.
Good luck with that.
When you're done with this, reboot into regular windows and hopefully they
will have captured and rid of this virus.

A friend has a virus that is preventing her from getting online. She is

computer. Now they say she just has a spyware blocker and needed
virus.more robust to completely protect the pc (I'm hearing that second hand).
Anyway, she doesn't want to pay the $130 for them to get rid of the
that
I haven't spoken to her directly yet, but my suggestion was going to be
hardshe copy her personal files onto a flash drive, and then reformat her
thatdrive provided that she has disc copies of the operating system and
applications. I thought this would be easier than buying more virus
software and cheaper than the $130. All I remember from DOS days is
Doyou could perform something like "format c:" type operation, then reboot
with the system disc and then reinstall the operating system from there.
I have that right, or is there a simpler thing to do?
