I completely agree with you Jack. This "impossible" shot does become
literally impossible with outside english. Inside is the only way I'd ever
be able to make this ball.
What I was saying is that on cuts that I need outside for position... I
would use outside. But there's a certain point where outside won't drop
the ball... at all.
Like the example I posted, for example.
The hard part of using inside on a cut was learning the squirt... and
where to line up the cuestick with the object ball... factoring for
distance, amount of english (1/2 tip, full tip, 2 tips), and then adding
in speed on top..... then figuring out if I should be lining up at a half
ball, 1/4 ball or even aiming for a full ball hit, but the squirt taking
care to move the cue ball over, and cut the OB into the pocket.

I've learned how to use the
inside english...... quite well as a matter of fact. Example from last
nights league match:
It would be impossible to make this shot with right hand english, imo.
My problem is that now when the OB is on the rail, and I need to use
outside english.... it's hard to see the shot.
I can do it, but it takes a bit more concentration to drop the ball
In the shot above, it's not just "hard to see" but right hand english
will never make it, no matter how much you practice it. The shot is not
a cut shot, it is a rail first kick shot. If you hit the ball first, as
in a cut shot, the ob ball will rebound off the rail and never get near
the pocket. If you hit the rail first with RH english, the CB will never
hit the OB, instead taking it's natural rightwardly bounce away from the
OB. You have to hit the rail first with LH spin so the CB bounces off
the rail in a leftwardly direction which has the effect of cutting the
OB in from the opposite side from which you are shooting.
Now here's the interesting part..... if the ball is on the rail... I'm
bias toward inside english. If it's more than an inch or 2 away, as far as
english goes I couldn't care less... I'll use whatever I need to use.
I find that interesting, anyway.
I find it easier to use either no english or inside english on rail
shots, preferring inside. Outside english for me is always a little
iffy and the sharper the cut is, the more iffy until it becomes
impossible, as in the above shot you posted. I think the reason I prefer
inside on normal rail shots that can be made with any sort of english is
I'm used to aiming at a simultaneous rail/ball hit and the squirt or
whatever tends to insure I hit the rail a little in front of the ball.
Also, I think there is a bit larger margin of error when hitting with
inside english, but I'm not sure about that, it just seems that way to
me. I also prefer balls frozen to the rail rather than a bit off the
rail as the angle gets sharper/cut gets thinner.
