For most of my life I've followed the adage "If you want to learn to do
something well, talk to someone who has already been successful in that
area." I'm sure that the regulars on this newsgroup all realized
improvement by experimentation after taking up the game, but over the course
of our careers we've all learned from others players and instructors who
were better than us.
No doubt many of us own the same books and videos and have learned and
improved a lot from them. What I'm interested in, though, is what expert
advice have you been fortunate enough to receive from top instructors or
players? What pros, top players or instructors are in your area and shares
information? What areas of the game do you feel you've achieved an expert
level of understanding from other experts in billiards? I think sharing our
sources will lead to some great threads about different subjects, and one of
my personal desires is to help promote this type of sharing of information
to help bring pool out of the darkness and make quality information
available to all.
I'll start it off:
During the 1990's, the local tournament scene in Denver was dominated by a
player by the name of Henry Granas. Henry won the BCA national
championships in 1989 (this was before there were different divisions, and
when pros could also play), and had several top ten finishes in pro events.
I played Henry in local tournaments probably a hundred times during the 90's
and only managed to beat him once. He retired when my game started to get
competitive with his - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! Anyway,
Henry's knowledge of every single aspect of the game was impeccable. I've
never met anyone since who took the smallest aspect of any shot or mental
part of the game and broke it down to such a fine degree.
The other major source of my pool knowledge is a local player and friend who
has spent two decades traveling the country staking top players and pros,
making friends with them, and filling literally dozens of notebooks with
their wisdom. In the company of Dave Hughes, I've been fortunate enough to
meet and talk with several pros. And Dave has instructed me on many of the
mental aspects of pool competition as well as the physical game that has
come directly from the mouths of top pros like Buddy Hall, Nick Varner, Dave
Matlock, Earl Strickland, Larry Nevel, Cliff Joyner, Allen Hopkins and
others.
No-one knows everything, and everyone can gain a new level of understanding
of the expert knowledge they do have by sharing. Maybe by sharing our
sources of expertise we can all learn something new. Who's yours?
