Re: When to Pushout

Therefore, when pushing you must be trying to win the game. In order
to win the game, you must give yourself the best chance to continue
shooting. And that means you must put your opponent as close to a
50/50 position as possible. Then, no matter what his decision, shoot
or pass, you will have given yourself the best chance to win the game.

Are you guys talking 50% for the pusher or the pushee?

We're talking about a position where the shooter has a 50% chance of
winning the game. We're also talking about shooters of nearly
identical skill levels.

I think Bob is
saying that, as you can't know what you opponent might do

Which I don't agree with at all. There's no reason to assume your
opponent is some magical pool god. He's human, just like you, you've
played before and he's no better or worse than you.

you can't know
what a 50% position is for your opponent.

If both shooters are of equal skill, then a 50% position for one, is
*by* *definition* a 50% position for the other.

All you can do is push to a
better position, not quite 50% for yourself. Not quite because your
opponent may get an advantage that you don't see, but still better than
what you have now. If this is so then Bob is correct. Attempting to find
the perfect 50% position is not only futile but risks giving up
something your opponent likes better that 50%. Thus just just searching
for an improved position, less than 50% for yourself is the key to pushing.

What you're talking about is the tactics of pushing out when your
opponent is better than you.
