Re: Play-off Safety

I took a couple of days off work to pick up my mother-in-law from the
airport and get her settled in - she's here for a month and doesn't
speak a word of English. Should be jolly fun... went to a friend's
baby's baptism on Sunday, we were already out of the play-off picture.
I was introduced to a Portuguese woman who apparently was a medium.
Later I said, "If that's a medium, I'd hate to see an extra-large..."
which earned me a few looks of disapproval and a "Hush-up!" from my
wife.

Saturday was the first day of the VNEA play-offs and our team was eager
to show what we could really do after sucking badly all year in the
league. To make a long story short, we won the first two matches
against teams that beat us during the year and lost the second two. I
played well, lost the first game (see below) and then won 5 in a row. I
lost another one with a bone-head move where I should have used the
rake but thought I could reach it - I played pretty well after that. I
was crisp and neat and in control - felt like I was Roger Orsulak for a
while. Got a few 'sandbagger' comments which is fair given I don't
usually play that well during the league season. Also earned the
biggest round of applause in the tournament when I was almost out,
stupidly hooked myself on the 8-ball but kicked off the top rail to
make a table length 8-ball into the corner pocket. My opponent said,
"Great shot!" I said, "Aw... it was only a fluke..." He said, "I know
that and you know that but they..." (pointing to the assembled crowd)
"don't know that..."

The reason I lost my first game is because I kept missing breaking out
a cluster of three balls. To my frustration, I just kept nudging them
closer together. I finally had this left after missing it yet again and
creating a tight 3-ball cluster on the rail. It's 8-ball and I'm low
ball. I couldn't think of a reasonable safety and called the 6-ball in
the opposite side pocket thinking if I hit the 1-ball at the right
angle it might pop the 6 off the rail and across the table. It did but
missed by quite a ways and the result gave my opponent an easy out.

What should I have done (I know I shouldn't have got into this pickle
in the first place)? Is there anything I could have attempted?

I like aggression here, also; perhaps kicking at the five to pocket the
one in side. Shoot with authority to reshuffle the deck hoping to hang
the six in the corner pocket
