Re: Need fundraising ideas

Cheese, BB, this is Odyssey of the Mind, not the 4H Club! They're
supposed to scheme, con, and swindle their way to $8,000!

At least, that's how I would interpret the rules. :-)

Chris, my first apprentice, is playing in a Sunday series of junior
9-ball tourneys. (Tony's going to visit Mom in MI for a few weeks, so
he's out of this session.) There, I met another kid who has a problem.

He's named Chris, too. Ten years old, very bright but not geeky (heck,
he plays pool pretty darned well!), part an Odyssey of the Mind team
that's won a spot in the World Finals. (www.odysseyofthemind.com).
Therein lies the problem.

Chris and his five teammates have to raise $8,000 to fund their trip
(with two adults) to Iowa State University for a week. (Yeah,
Disneyworld would be cheaper!) The fundraising model provided by their
school is...

Candy bars. Buy for 50 cents, sell for a buck.

"Chris, you have GOT to be kidding me!" I exclaimed in disgust.

"No, I'm not. And it sucks. We've only raised about $176 so far."

"OK, this is part of the Odyssey of the Mind competition. You bright
little people are supposed to be able to think outside of the box. So,
how can you make a lot more money a lot faster?"

His father won't let me take the little shark on a road trip. I'm
hoping the combined wisdom of RSB can supplement my two suggestions:

1. Sell pro- and anti-immigrant lapel pins, with ribbons
(red/white/green and red/white/blue) for five bucks apiece to both
sides.

2. Erect a Web site and charge $29.95 to download pictures of the team
in their bathtubs.

Can anyone improve on those?

Hit the local leaques for sponsorships.
