Well you have taken a step more than most people do by even thinking about
practicing safety shots. Now you just have to go do it! Work on that
exercise for a week or two and see how much better you can get at safety
play. Managing to 3 foul out a player in a game of 9 Ball was much more
challenging to me than I thought it would be and took me longer to achieve
than being able to learn to run a rack out.
