Hamster, all I can tell you is what works for me (I gave up trying to
rationalize it a long time ago): I prefer to use a touch of outside english
because it feels natural to me, I make more balls, and I have greater
confidence shooting that way.
But, over the years, I've learned to shoot more and more shots without
english and inside english and to use whatever I need to suit the situation.
But given my druthers, I'm using a (official RSB measurement term follows)
smidge of outside english.
As to the length of the shot, it's like everything else in pool: you often
have to adjust for speed, RPMs, swerve, throw, squirt, deflection, the
cloth, rubber, and pockets.
Pool is as much art as it is science :-)
