And was coming off a well publicised season in the PCL where he had 222

And do you think that ANYBODY on St. Louis knew either Gehrig's SLG% or
OBP in 1926?

I'll tell you one thing they knew, that Lazzeri had 114 RBIs in 1926,
which was 2 more than Gehrig had.

No, there was no "matching up" being done in 1926. Hornsby just thought
that Alexander was his best bet out of the bullpen with Haines tiring.
He got lucky that Tony's long drive went foul with the bases loaded.

Look, I've already shown that they had a higher chance of a walk off
extra base hit by either Meusel or Gehrig (about 6.5%) than they had of
Ruth attempting to stael 2B, making it, and scoring on a Meusel hit
with nothing else happening that would have scored Ruth from 1B without
the steal (about 5%)

So it's already a better chance of the Yankees winning the game
outright by not attempting to steal than there is of the Yankees tying
the game because of Ruth's steal, which is no guarantee of them
eventually winning the game.

If you think that the jury is still out on this I'd like to get you
into a computer baseball league for money.
