Apparently he has an Italian grandparent and qualifies for citizenship if he
were to apply.

According to the story, baseball officials and the players union want as
much depth as possible in the tournament and so they are using the broadest
possible qualification rules to help countries field strong teams. Shrewd,
NBA-ish marketing move, if you ask me.
