I think the whole year should all be playoffs. For the first 87
games, there are no divisions and every team plays every other team 3
times. Then, the top 15 teams and the bottom 15 teams get separated
into 2 leagues. No one will care what the bottom 15 teams do and the
top 15 teams will then play each other 3 times. After that, the top 8
teams play each other 3 times, and then the top 4 teams will play each
other 3 times, and then the top 2 teams will play each other 3 times.
The team with the best record for the whole year, not necessarily the
team that won the last 3-game series, will be crowned the champion.
This has the drawback of having anti-climactic games (which can be
cancelled the way the bottom of the 9th is cancelled if the home team
is ahead) towards the end once the best team has clinched but it has
what, to me, is the most important factor of maximizing the chance
that the best team is honored with a championship, and eliminates
travesties of justice such as declaring mediocre teams such as the
1987 Minnesota Twins champions.
