It's whiner, dingleberry. You killed it. Why not take credit for it ?

He didn't kill anything, at least not single handed. Everyone that felt
compelled to answer the drivel helped.

If you just read his posts, and not the many replies, it has been rather
entertaining.

He, and a few others, were symptoms, not causes. Lagging, not
leading, indicators of the larger phenomenon. Being born at the
end of the "baby boom" I've seen the passing of more than one
cultural trend just about the time I was moving through it. There is
a tendency to see the actors as writing the script, as oppose
to merely giving it voice.

The whole of USENET isn't of much use anymore.

Which tends to support the assertion that no particular
actors are responsible for its demise. I'm reminded of my
observations on this subject from a few years back.

The jist of which was:

"It's like a pot luck. I've been part of groups that had potlucks.
Often they are started by folks who like to cook. They are really
good,
good food and usually lots of it. Good food will attract people,
even
people who don't like to cook. Then there will be more folks than
food.
Some folks who come will bring stuff they bought at the deli counter,
which isn't bad but is sorta besides the point. Pretty soon the
cooks
drop out for a variety of reasons, and the only folks left are the
ones
that drop by the deli counter. That doesn't attract alot of new
folks,
'cause they can just go by the deli counter themselves and take it
home. Ultimately, one day more folks show up than food and someone
ends up ordering a pizza or two. Pretty soon no one is coming."

USENET in general, and rec.skydiving lost their cooks. The
question basically is why.

People grow up and move on? Skydiving is a transiet affair anyway,
people coming and going. I

What you're not grasping is the phenomenon trancends skydiving.
The more reasonable explanation is that all things are not reversable
and once the negative trends start, the positive factors will leave,
not to return, regardless of the actions of the negative factors. In
my
screed I mention that I tend towards the motto of "leave no sign of
my passing" these days. If I find something good, trying to change it
is pointless and trying to attract attention to others will only
destroy it.
