For all the theorizing about rec.skydiving, I've actually noticed
that
virtually all of USENET is dying a very slow and painful death.
Virtually all groups have sunk into never ending political pissing
contests. Spam is so wide spread, hardly anyone bothers to
complain. Anyone with any expertise in any subject stays
away from said subject groups.

My personal and current theory is that the IM culture has
replaced it. Even this culture is rapidly being overcome by
the "youtube" culture. Home made, home grown multimedia
efforts seem to be the bread and butter of the various
specialty sites which have replaced newsgroups. I haven't
been to DZ.com is some time but at others I have frequented,
they've all started moving towards being able to post and
share these kinds of efforts, at least within the context
of their subjects.

But if you want to talk signal to noise, wander through
any of them. Near as I can tell it's just a way to increase
the bandwidth of the "noise".
