The poster threatened to render rec.skydiving useless. That's like

The noise to signal ratio is about the same as it usually is these
days.

If there was a way to filter out posters that haven't made a jump in
years -
and likely never will again - there might be hope. As it stands, this
newsgroup has become entirely irrelevant.

Hmmmm, Winsor, that was weird-- sounds like you consider all skydivers
to be something else after so much time he/she has away from the
air... do they change back into whuffos in yer view? Folks get
injured, get older, marry whuffos, get too poor to buy jumps, get
scared, change life priorities, whatever reason they don't jump now,
doesn't matter, they're still skydivers, I believe- and we have always
been irrelevant here; you know that- (grin)

he's not able to think at the higher levels required for the
Humanities and Arts. Perhaps your question will help him rise to the
occasion. Or perhaps his Geeky ego will trip him up.


Since the response bypassed my killfile, I'll address the previous post.

My point here is that Jimmy Smith appears to have nothing to do but sit
around and flood the newsgroup with drivel. It has been so long since he
has been in the air that just about none of the things about which he is
concerned matter at all. It's like walking around wearing an "Impeach
Nixon!" buton - it may be an amusing novelty for a few seconds, but it is
fundamentally pointless and out of date.

This newsgroup used to be the one place where one could expect to find the
most current information about people and events in the sport. There was
always the odd thread about something or another that had nothing much to do
with the sport, but you did not have to dig through page after page of
drivel to find something of interest.

Now a perusal of Google shows that the newsgroup is little more than an
outlet for Jimmy Smith in his dotage, and a place for people to reflexively
point out (quite accuratly) that he's full of *** coming and going.

It is a shame that my technical education renders me incapable of
distinguishing a Manet from a Matisse, or telling Beethoven from Chopin, or
reading anything more erudite than a technical manual - but I can certainly
tell that the bulk of what shows up on this newsgroup these days is
nonsense.

Better men than I have been telling Jimmy Smith to STFU for years now, to no
effect. My point about people who don't jump anymore was pretty much
directed at him. The point was not so much that people who do not jump are
irrelevant, just that he is and has been for years.

Even if Jimmy Smith was to stop posting today, the damage is done. This
newsgroup has been the cyber-equivalent of a septic tank long enough that I
doubt if it could ever recover.

I don't check this newsgroup often, since the likelihood that there will be
something of even passing interest borders on zero. What I can't figure out
is why anyone would even bother to stage a sporge attack. Jimmy Smith has
been flooding this newsgroup with drivel more effectively than any bot
could, and he has been doing it for years. He's a one-man denial-of-service
system.
