Michael - as others have said, wear a wool or acrylic sock, only thick
enough to leave enough room so your toes can move freely.
Nordic ski boots are not very warm nor are they designed to be warm.
In order to keep good "feel" between your feet and the ski, you really
need to fit them with thin-ish socks.
But it is VERY easy to keep your feet warm. If they get cold with a
good sock, simply invest in some overboots. Several are made ranging
from thinish neoprene kind that just cover the body of the foot (boot
glove is one), to neoprene full height (e.g. Salomon Carbon) to acrylic
pile full height (e.g. Alpina, but many other types).
Virtually any kind of overboot can be used with any kind of boot -
don't get hung up on brand name. If you use Salomon pilot bindings,
you might need to customize the bottom of the overboot to accomodate
the second attachment, but it's no big deal.
The old Norskes use / used an oversized ragg wool type sock pulled over
the boot, with the toe cut out to accomodate the binding connection. I
used these for many, many years. Ugly, but work perfectly. I learned
this trick from some Norskes in 1975.
No reason for cold feet.
