Thanks Bob,
It is exactly what I was looking for...

Well I haven't been able to log onto aioe.org news server since yesterday. It keeps saying,
"500 too many connections", so I am now trying out news.motzarella.org. This one seems to be more stable but you need to register to use it but it is free.

I think if you have your newsreader set up to check for new messages too often, it does that. I think their limit is 100 or something. It'll probably start again in 1/2 day or 1 day.

No, I think it's some weird problem at the server. Over several years, every once in a while I get an elaborate error message involving "too many connections", but it has nothing to do with anything I've been doing. If it happens for more than a few hours I email the service that provides usenet to my ISP and the problem goes away within a few hours, sometimes overnight.

A long time ago I had a long series of back-and-forth emails with them and eventually they figured out the solution, although they didn't tell me what the problem was.

My guess is that somebody has a really clumsy employee who keeps tripping over a cord and pulling out a plug. Nobody notices until somebody (me) sends them email, and it was a real bitch finding out who they were in the first place so maybe I'm the only one who knows who to yell at.

My guess is it's exactly what its trying to say it is. Their server cannot handle more than X number of connections at one time. Whne it drops below that number new people are able to log in if they are lucky enough to get in before someone else.

That sounds reasonable, except I've gotten the message after I'm already logged in. There was also a reference to "you are allowed only 2 connections" which made no sense at all since I was the only one reading news at the time. If each message = 1 connection, I should still be using only one connection -- there is only one message on the screen.

Any news admins here who might know the truth?
