Uhm, note to JQ:
Are you going to get some new knees?
RW

Hi RW,
At the moment I do not have health insurance coverage. It will be one of
the first things I will check into when I do get it. My last orthopedic
surgeon told me to wait as long as I could before getting my knees
replaced, when the pain becomes to much to handle then it is time. I can
still walk with not much problems, I can't to do a lot of other
activities without pain though.

This year while skiing I changed the pain meds from Tylenol to
ibuprophone to Alieve and the Alieve was the trick, I take way more than
the labels says though.

I have a neighbor/friend who is a semi-retired
osteopath. He says that basically the amount on
the label is about half enough for serious pain
relief. This recommendations for ibuprophen is
certainly double for constant use for a few
weeks as in treating inflamation. This is so the
inflamation goes down so the injury can heal

He recommends even more for occasional use.

If I've (ob)skied for three days running, I'm
pretty well crippled. On and after forth day I
start with 4 Ibuprophen at breakfast and 4 if
needed at lunch. With this, I can ski for
several more days in a row. I haven't graduated
Aleve yet, however. Note the food times to take
the meds. Extremely important. Also not that
I don't take the med at bedtime. If I've
skied, I will have no trouble sleeping.

Ibuprophen and Aleve both treat inflammation
which causes pain. I've painful scenarios
which don't involve inflammation. For this
Tylenol or some Tylenol mixed with something
stronger is called for.

I suspect that your knees are inflamed and that
ibuprophen or Aleve are the right things to use.

The major problem I have with both of my knees are
that I have bone on bone contact for about 1/3 to 1/2
of the joint and at this point maybe more. I do
have joint swelling, but while skiing the pain is seems
to be generated from impact/jarring. The faster I ski the
greater the pain and if hit an area that has a lot of small
bumps that can be murderous.

I was taking 8 Tylenols 1/2 hour before I skied and 4 more
4 hours later. I did the same with Ibuprophen which worked
a little better and like you said because of the swelling.
I take 4 Aleve before I ski and 6 - 8 hours later depending
on how my knees feel. I don't normally use any pain meds
when I am not skiing unless, I have some other major joint pains.

This getting older thing is a bitch, I never thought my body
would be falling apart like it is. I know when I was younger
and competing/training on a national level many of the older
guys that I knew warned me that I'd pay for the physical abuse
I was putting my body through when I got older. Of course I
told myself that they didn't know what they are talking about. It is
funny how the picture has gone around 360 degree, now I tell
the young athlete the same things I was told and am going through
they respond exactly as I did.
