Wes Bunch got home from Aconcagua and we discussed this question last
week. The slab releases because it has lost elasticity.

According to John Perry Barlow, "Jeff Davis is a truly gifted trouble-maker."

Wiklipedius say:

"Elasticity is a branch of physics which studies the properties of
elastic materials. A material is said to be elastic if it deforms
under stress (e.g., external forces), but then returns to its original
shape when the stress is removed."

Given that, what is the largest measured elastic deformation in a snow
slab that has returned to its original shape?
