No. Akira "always the bridesmaid, never the bride" will have several more improbable 2nd place finishes in his WC/Olympic career, but he's cursed to stay off the top step.

Then the media goes wild about this "nobody" from Japan winning the
gold.

"Well, I never heard of him, Steve! Did you?" "Uh, well, actually..."

Then they find out that just before the race he had a glass of
Sake and that he has a crush on Katie Couric. Then we see Akira
sneaking off to Katie's room with flowers at midnight all dressed up
and he becomes known as "The Japanese Alberto Tomba". Yea, that's
probably what will really happen - you know, just so the media can piss
me off ever more.

Well, you know, titles of the form, "The <insert nationality> <insert famous person for whom the comparison really doesn't work but who has enough name recognition>" are what the US media does with sports that it feels the US public doesn't understand.
