I suspect you still have to teach the old long ski method first, so
the skier can control his speed even on flat bunny slopes, then
progress to the newer style, which allows the ski to build speed on the
downhill portion of the turn, thus gaining overall speed.
I had an argument/discussion with an oldster trying new skis for the
second day. At DonnerSkiRanch, a basically bunny resort, he extolled
virtures of the new short wides, while distaining the old parallels.
He was a ski instructor there, so could ski. We were riding mainly
Chair6, the one semisteep run facing Boreal. He said he rode the new
style, carving and NOT skidding. I rode with him, in front, behind,
and in the steeps, he hopped turned, just like the old 207's, and
carved the bunny stuff.
He just couldn't admit that when it gets steeper, the skier had to
rely on the old tail skid speed check style!
Look at any extreme ski contest. When it's extreme, everyone resorts
to shortswing jump turns.
So you gotta teach BOTH styles still, as a intermediate slope to a
beginner IS an extreme slope.
