About 1,000 Australian soldiers are currently serving in the conflict-ravaged country, performing dangerous work. "We currently don't have in contemplation any increase of the numbers that we have," Mr Smith told ABC TV today.

"They're in southern Afghanistan doing a lot of the heavy-duty and difficult and dangerous work so we don't have an increase of our combat troops in contemplation at this time."

Australian troops kill children, again

Five children were shot dead by Australian troops on February 12, near the village of Sarmorghab in Oruzgan province.

A February 13 defence department statement admitted the children, and an undisclosed number of other civilians, were killed, along with a "suspected insurgent".
