It seems to me, this was illegal. It had to be locked in the safe, too.
The ammunition had to be stored apart from the weapons.
German gun nuts are still gun nuts, though they might pronounce it
like gun "noots". I wonder if Dad will keep his gun collection in
memory of his dead son?
He probably has no choice to "will". I assume police collected them.
LG
Why would you assume that?
Probably because, as Joerg said, the dad was criminally negligent by
leaving the one gun outside the safe. Once suspected of a gun crime,
they'd at least remove the firearms until a court determines dad's
guilt or innocence. If dad is found innocent, they'd probably return
the guns to him. Would it be any different in the U.S.?

I'd assume so.

I don't think you can assume it.

If you get arrested for drunk driving, do they take away all the family
cars?

Isn't there some small mention of personal property in the constitution?

I think if you commit a crime, all bets are off. If you're caught
drug trafficing, the Feds and State can confiscate your car, your
boat, your house, whatever they want. When you're convicted of that
crime, the goods (including your car, your boat, your house) can be
auctioned off to the public and the money produced by the sale of
those is kept by the government. If you shoot someone, they'll take
your gun into evidence and you probably won't get it back. If you're
caught DUI, they tow your car away. You can get it back. But then
you have a hearing and you lose your license for a minimum of 30 days
so you can't drive it anyway. If you're driving someone's car, that
car is still impounded. They don't arrest you and deliver the car to
the owner. The owner has to come get it and pay to have the car
returned from the police pound or towyard. A friend of mine did a
really stupid thing years back. He was drunk and decided to show his
friends a gun that was willed to him by his dad when his dad passed.
The gun was an antique that his father had gotten when he was in WW2.
My drunk friend not only showed his friends the gun (not in a
threatening way) but the gun was loaded and my drunk buddy ended up
shooting himself in the leg. The police came before the ambulance, as
they usually do whenever there is a shooting to make sure the scene is
safe for the EMTs. The police confiscated the gun even though my
friend and other witnesses told them it was an accident and he shot
himself. Then the ambulance carted his sorry ass to the hospital. He
had a hell of a time getting that gun back and ended up having to hire
a lawyer to petition the court with his father's will that named the
gun.

IMHO, the government can seize whatever they like. It's big brother
and there's not much we can do about it. Look what happens to people
who live in areas where the government decides to build a roadway.
They offer you money for your house. Take it or leave it. Literally.

whoa

completely and I mean COMPLETELY missed the point and the whole point
.
