Excellent point.
But is it something that you need to react correctly
to in an emergency, when you're possibly narced?
Just asking the (to me) obvious question.
It is a fair question, and to a degree you also provide the answer:
... Although
I suppose that if both valves on a manifold turned off
towards the body, it wouldn't take that long to re-learn.
That's the classical 'muscle memory' advocacy.
Interesting consideration -- but I'd really want to keep
"helpful" divemasters away from my kit in that case.
More the reason to see if its reasonable to consider using a ball
valve instead: its either straight in line (open), or 90 degrees
perpendicular (closed).
I can see an obvious problem with this-- opening high
pressure gas that quickly is dangerous. Particularly
so with O2 or O2 rich mixes. Also, it would hammer the
s***t out of the high pressure seats in the regs.

In general, the only problem is that no one has taken a $57 MSRP
high pressure gas service ball valve (such as this one):
...and integrated its essentials into a standard scuba tank thread
valve assembly to even consider it for use.
There is this problem as well. But the seats and adiabatic heating
are much more of a concern for me.
