He was a father and husband.
He knew me as a scuba friend.
But I'll go to his viewing as a fellow Firefighter.
He was also in the military.
50 yrs old and died from an MI while he was scuba diving.
We lost a good one.
sorry to hear of the loss of your mate.
Don't know about in the US but here fire-fighters ( proper ones ) have high
chance of an early MI or chronic disease even though they are fit.
They may have a higher chance here too. I don't know. I understand
what you mean by "proper ones". Most of us in my state here in the US
are volunteer. Only those in the large cities in my state are paid
firefighters. However, that doesn't mean that we don't have training
or equipment. We are not allowed to volunteer to fight fires here
without training. That training is further divided into things like
"interior qualified", meaning that you can go inside a burning
building. You must also qualify in order to be able to drive the
engine and the tanker and the special services unit truck. We are
also required by law to have HAZMAT training which gets into problems
with dangerous chemicals. And we are required to take at least one
class in extricating people from a crashed vehicle. Like you and like
paid firefighters here, we have respirators to wear. We have decent
gear that is provided by the county and in some cases, by the state.
The state just bought our marine rescue unit lots of goodies. For the
things that we need that are not provided by the government, we hold
fund-raiser events. It seems to work. :-)
