I'm far more afraid of a wacko legally carrying a gun who has yet to
be convicted of a crime than I am of the unarmed shoplifter.

You love looking at the world in black and white, but the fact is that
"criminal" and "law-abiding citizen" are hardly definite terms.
Popeye has been arrested before and charged with a crime. So I have
I. You have even admitted on rec.scuba your commission of certain
copyright crimes among others. That makes the three of us criminals.

How many "law abiding" citizens do you truly know? There are a lot of
laws out there...

Are you more afraid of a criminal carrying a firearm than a law abiding
citizen carrying one?

Since there's not really such a thing as a law-abiding citizen, I fear
them all.

Are you more afraid os someone whose carrying one in order to impose his
will illegally or to do harm to othres or someone carrying one in order to
lawfully defend himself and others (includes police?)

I'm afraid of those who purport to carry them to lawfully defend
themselves but end up imposing their will illegally and/or doing harm
to others.

Do you see the difference?

No. You're trying to impose bright lines on society. Unfortunately
people aren't so easily pigeon-holed. Your law-abiding citizen one
day might go to work and shoot up his workplace the next day after he
gets laid off. Or when his children start to get hungry during the
upcoming recession, he might knock off a liquor store.

When you can find the test that truly shows who's going to stay law
abiding in the future, then I'll agree to giving those people gun
licenses. Otherwise, all you're doing is arming potential criminals
since all of us are potential criminals.
