I was thinking of that wondrous big toy that Dirty Harry used in his
movies. I always wondered if anyone outside of the wild west and cheesy
movies actually carried such a thing.
Very few people carry a .44 mag revolver for personal defense... It tends
to not be that concealable for one thing... For another, the recoil is
such that 2nd shot placement is not as quick... Although I have a .44 mag
revolver (Ruger), it stays in my gun safe... I've taken it to the range a
couple of times... If you use .44 special rounds in it, the recoil is not
too bad... It could be an acceptable home defense weapon if you were to
choose the lower velocity non-magnum rounds... Personally, I prefer to
have more than 6 rounds available to me initially...
Actually, quite a few people carry a .44 magnum for personal defense. It's
just not normally personal defense against humans.
The .44 magnum is a popular sidearm pretty much anywhere that life
threatening wildlife is likely to be encountered. For some time, it's been
the preferred weapon for possible confrontations with bears, hogs, large
predatory cats and even elk, deer and other animals that are not normally
thought of as dangerous, but that have, on occasion injured and even killed
people that encountered them at the wrong time and place.
For a number of years, I carried a 6" barrel Ruger Super Blackhawk in a
shoulder holster while hunting in the Everglades, particularly when hunting
birds. We have wild hogs, alligators and panthers (same as mountain lions,
just in places without mountains) down here and birdshot isn't enough to
even annoy them seriously. Toward the end of my hunting days, I purchased a
Colt Delta Elite, a gun almost as powerful, but much easier and lighter to
carry. It too was carried in a shoulder holster and, if I happened to have a
jacket on, was well concealed. The point of the shoulder holster, however,
was not to conceal the weapon, but to keep it out of the water. Walking in
the Everglades is not a dry activity.
